Introduction:

The Department of Mathematics of the International University, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, was established in 2005. Currently, the faculty consists of 2 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 3 PhDs, and 1 PhD candidate in Statistics. All faculty members of the Mathematics Department have been trained at the PhD or postdoctoral levels in advanced countries such as the United States, France, Germany, Italia, Poland, Finland, etc. The faculty members have extensive experience in teaching, training, and are highly active in scientific research.

The Mathematics Department is responsible for developing syllabi, curricula, and delivering mathematics courses for students at the International University. Mathematics courses are designed with the aim of providing fundamental knowledge of the subject and developing logical thinking for students. The taught topics are closely linked to applications in each student’s specialized field of study.

The Mathematics Department has been offering undergraduate programs in Applied Mathematics (Financial Engineering and Risk Management) since 2013 and Statistics (Applied Statistics) since 2023.

Undegraduate programs: Applied Mathematics and Statistics

  1. Applied Mathematics (Financial Engineering and Risk Management)

The field of Financial Engineering and Risk Management is a multidisciplinary field that integrates knowledge and skills from various areas such as economics, mathematics, applied mathematics, information technology, data science, and financial theory. Financial engineers use quantitative analysis tools to develop financial market transactions through mathematical models, statistics, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. The program provides students with a foundational understanding of financial theory and microeconomic and macroeconomic principles, and simultaneously, it imparts in-depth knowledge of the theory and applications of financial mathematics models and portfolio risk management, probability-statistics models, optimization, and machine learning. Importantly, students are equipped with programming skills and proficiency in big data analysis. Graduates in Financial Engineering and Risk Management can apply and design models and algorithms in finance and financial computation software. They can analyze data to predict future market trends and estimate the risk exposure of investment portfolios.

Career opportunities after graduation include:

  • Employment in commercial banks, investment banks, and digital banks.
  • Positions in analysis and risk management, portfolio management in various industries, and investment funds.
  • Research and market analysis roles in securities companies and investment funds.
  • Actuarial specialists in insurance companies, financial technology enterprises, and data science engineers.
  • Pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in Quantitative Finance, Applied Mathematics, and related fields (Machine Learning, AI, Data Science, Statistics, Computational Finance and Economics) in advanced countries.
  1. Statistics (Applied Statistics)

In the era of digital transformation, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence (AI), data plays a crucial role in numerous aspects of social life, where Statistics serves as the core foundation of modern data science and the digital economy. The Applied Statistics program provides students with a solid foundation in Mathematics, Optimization, Probability-Statistics, machine learning and deep learning. Additionally, it offers in-depth knowledge of applied statistical models in the analysis, forecasting of Finance, Business, and Insurance. Particularly, students are equipped with programming, modelling and simulation skills, as well as data analysis skills. The program allows students to gain a profound understanding of the workings of modern statistical analysis.

According to the Labor Supply Center’s survey (Ministry of Education and Training), Mathematics and Statistics ranked sixth in the top 10 fields with the highest employment rates in 2021.

Graduates in Statistics can pursue the following careers:

  • Statistical analysis at large banks, investment funds, financial technology companies, and auditing firms such as KPMG and securities companies.
  • Actuarial specialists, credit assessment roles (FE Credit, Viet Credit, etc.).
  • Market research, business analysis for enterprises, and major corporations like Vega Corporation and Minerva.
  • Professional research analysts, statistical data analysts at research institutes focusing on economic and social studies.
  • Statistical research in biology, medicine, and healthcare at research institutes.
  • Employment in Industry 4.0 revolution-oriented corporations such as FPT Software, TMA, Zalo, Coccoc, Tiki, Lazada, VNG, Tenpoint7 Vietnam, Bee Group, PwC.
  • Pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in Applied Statistics and related fields (Machine Learning, AI, Data Science, Biostatistics, Biomedicine) in advanced countries.

Research:

The Department of Mathematics has consistently been a leading unit within the university and the entire Ho Chi Minh City National University. From 2012 to 2019, the Mathematics Department continuously received the “Outstanding Scientific Publication Unit” award from the Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, with several individuals from the department also receiving awards for “Outstanding Scientific Publications.” On average, each year, the Mathematics Department publishes 15-25 ISI journal articles, with an average of 2.0-3.0 articles per year per faculty member. Faculty members of the Mathematics Department have conducted over 15 projects funded by NAFOSTED, sponsored by the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (Ministry of Science and Technology). Many works by our faculties have been published in high quality journals (ISI index and listed by NAFOSTED).

Research areas of the faculty include Optimization, Stochastic Processes, Stochastic Differential Equations, Control theory, Dynamical Systems, Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Applied Mathematics in Physics and Engineering, Probability, Statistics, Machine Learning, and Financial Mathematics.
